Capital City Chapter

With everyone anxious to open up their ponds it was an excellent time to welcome Cari Spears to our April meeting. She is a master gardener, and showed us her favorite method for repotting her water plants using kitty litter. Her take home message was fertilize, fertilize, fertilize...

Cari's steps for repotting:
1. Cari lines her pots with landscaping fabric
2. Fills the pot with kitty litter (the cheaper the better-but non clumping!)
3. Adds Osmocote a slow release fertilizer which feeds up to 4 months and aqua fertilizer tablets, any brand
4. Then she adds her plant for transplanting, adds pebbles leaving an inch to the top of the pot
5. Place it in your pond

Cari shared many other tips and websites, she would be happy to answer any questions and you can contact her by e-mail cspear@mchsi.com if you would like more information.

For our next meeting we are encouraging everyone to visit the plant sales that will be taking place in May:

Master Gardeners Plant Sale (no water plants, but many other plants including herbs, grasses, vegetables, perennials and annuals). May 7th and 8th starting @ 8:00am. It takes place at the west end of Park Fair Mall on 2nd and Euclid.

For our upcoming summer meetings we will try and visit some of our member's gardens in June, July, August and September.

We have a few volunteers but if you are interested in hosting a meeting contact me RobinWineland@aol.com or Doug Reich DRgardener@aol.com.

We would still like some volunteers for the CIWGA Plant Tours on July 16th and 17th. You'll see a lot of beautiful gardens and meet some very special people. Please, if you are interested in helping out in any way send an e-mail to John.Selin@Drake.edu. Watch for more information in the coming newsletters.

Hope to see you there.
