That sure was a good hog roast. I want to thank a lot of people that made it possible. Jim Jordan provided the hog roaster, processed the hog, and just made this hog roast possible. He not only did all this but it was fun helping Jim. We are very fortunate that Jim is a great volunteer for our organization. Thanks Jim!
I also want to thank Gary Craven for taking vacation on the day of the hog roast to roast the hog. He is a good cook and he, also, is a lot of fun. Thanks Gary!
Of course, we are indebted to Tom and Marilyn Kenney for hosting the event. Great garden to have our roast and lots of room. Thanks Tom and Marilyn!
Lori Peak and Carolyn and Greg Knop provided the drinks and dessert. Thank you. Man, with all this food it was bound to be a good time.
Okay, how do we top this for our next meeting? Well, I think I have come with it -- we are touring two very nice gardens on Monday, June 14. Both have been on our water garden tour a few years ago and deserve our revisit. Let's first visit Ada Mae Lewis' garden at 122 N. Russell. North Russell is a couple of blocks to the east of Hilton Coliseum on Lincoln Way. Turn north -- it is only a few houses down on Russell on the East side of the road. Meet there at 6:30 and after we see her garden then on to Cactus Jack and Emy Barringer's garden at 3203 Greenwood Circle, Ames. This is in the Northridge subdivision. We will caravan to their place from Ada Mae's but for those of you that may be running late you can get to the Barringer's by turning off of Carver Ave. (the street that runs N and S along the Northridge subdivision) onto Northridge Pkwy. Take your second right onto Valley View Rd. off of Northridge Pkwy. Go one block and turn left on Greenwood Rd. This runs straight into Greenwood Circle. Their place is on the NW corner of Greenwood Circle and Ridgetop Rd.
Both gardens are first class but both are very different. I choose these two gardens because of their uniqueness, their differences and their beauty. Ada Mae has had her water garden for maybe five years and it is nestled right off her deck and it is the centerpiece of her garden. Cactus Jack and Emy's water garden is very large and unique. Long stream that cascades down the hill towards a gazebo. They have had theirs for maybe 6 or 7 years.
Remember our Central Iowa Tour of Water Gardens on July 17 and 18th that we are hosting. This is the big one and we will have more information and tour tickets available at our meeting/tour on June 14 (Monday). Mark your calendars.
We'll see everybody on June 14.
The Big Toad, Jamie
