The Des Moines area group will be meeting at 7:00 PM on June 17th at the home of John Selin in Indianola. The Selin's address is 307 W. Salem - phone is 961-2831 if you have any questions. Directions to the Selins are to go south out of Des Moines past Southridge Mall on Highway 65/69. Proceed into Indianola to highway 92 and turn right (west). Then go 4 blocks to "B" Street and turn right. Go 2 blocks north to Salem and turn left. Their house is the 4th house on your left.
Please note that we are meeting ONE WEEK earlier than usual. At this time there is no planned program so the meeting will be primarily social and to enjoy viewing the Selin's ponds! (Of course John says we can help pull weeds if we want to!) We also hope to talk about plans for the next year in our organization. Hope to see you all there.
On a cold, windy night, Monday, May 13, 2003, seven brave members ventured to Osage for the Top of Iowa Water Garden meeting. After members toured the grounds, President Ed Schroeder opened the meeting at 7:45. He thanked Duane and Deb O'Banion for bringing refreshments. After a slight date revision minutes were approved. The treasurer reported $291.00 for a beginning of the month balance, with income of $99.00 from our plant exchange for a total of $390.00 end of the month balance.
Old Business: A motion was made by Deb O'Banion and seconded by Mary Schultz to have club membership begin the day and month a member pays dues, and renewable the same day and month one year later. (Previously all membership dues began and ended in May.) Dues will continue to be $25.00/couple or $15/individual per year with $7/membership unit going to CIWGA. The schedule puts our association in alignment with CIWGA. Motion passed. Please send your dues to: Pat Dall-Winther at 1349 Cameo Avenue, Nora Springs, IA 50458.
We discussed ways to make it easier for Fountain Supporters to recognize active members. Suggestions included changing the membership card format by leaving a larger area to write in the expiration date, pre-printing the expiration date, changing the flower/color of the cards each year, adding a web site address, and sending a membership list to Fountain Supporters. Suggestions will be taken into consideration when making new cards and in networking with Fountain Supporters. Ed will check with Jamie to see if CIWGA will send out their membership list.
A motion was made, seconded and passed to keep the same slate of officers for another year.
Top of Iowa Water Garden Association brochures are complete. Deb dropped some at Kriegers, Drug Town, Earl May and Happy Acres.
We all thought our plant sale went GREAT. We're excited to open it to the public next year.
New Business: Ed and Kathy brought "Lizzie" an identical cousin of the CIWGA Lizzie. We drew names to see would be the lucky person to take Lizzie home. The winner was Ed who now has the responsibility of taking Lizzie's picture and sharing a humorous story of her month at his pond. Ed will bring Lizzie back next month and we'll draw again to see who Lizzie goes home with.
Next Meeting: June 16th, 7:00 p.m. at Stan Fitz Gardens in Rockford. The address is 14 6th St. Southeast. Rose Kruger will bring refreshments. Meeting adjourned at 8:30.
Mary Fisk of Happy Acres gave a great program on plants as oxygenators and even gave away a door prize to the winner, Kathy.
