Steve and Anne Quick, the owners, celebrated 20 years of service to the community on April 7, 2003! A Spring Open House was held April 11-12 with free ice cream sodas and many special prices.
The store is a full service hardware store where you can also purchase paint, garden equipment, housewares, bicycles, grills, etc. Anne, a Story County Master Gardener, says they took over the Ace hardware store in 1983 when it was located in The Plaza and was just 3,000 sq ft. They soon joined Hardware Hank, an upper Midwest cooperative effort, and moved to their present freestanding location where they now have 8,000 sq ft. Since then, they have raised two sons, Brian, who is a junior at Iowa State University in Ag Systems Technology, and Trent, who will graduate from Ballard High School this spring.
They offer 10% discount to CIWGA members on all lawn and garden items not already on sale. Ponderers/gardeners will find lots of helpful items at Quick's.
There are pond test kits to check your pond's pH level, chlorine removers, and pH decreasers. A variety of pumps and parts are available. A complete catalog makes it easy to get almost anything -- order on Monday, it's here Wednesday! They have phosphate-free fertilizers that will not harm your fish due to drift or run-off into your pond. Quick's has a charming selection of garden ornaments, whirly items, pond lights, water lights, solar lights and new electric lights for in your pond! For the garden, annual and perennial bedding plants are available in spring.
Rental items to improve your lawn include slit seeders, dethatchers, rototillers (front-tine and rear-tine), pumps to drain ponds (for 2-in hose), and augers to dig postholes. To protect new trees, they have a new item called a mulch mat, black and made from recycled tires, that lets water, not weeds through, and is easy on your trimming equipment.
