We had a great turnout for our meeting last month (the biggest we've had yet) but unfortunately our speakers who were to present on waterfalls and streams didn't show up. We don't know what happened at this point - some sort of mix-up obviously. Fortunately Doug, due to him having had lots of "pond experience" was able to give a great impromptu talk and I heard many positive comments about it from the group. Our next meeting will be April 29th as previously scheduled but we don't have a topic yet.
Sixteen members came to hear Julie Wright speak about the "Central Gardens of Iowa" project when we met in the Lakeside Room at Clear Lake's Band Shelter on March 16th.
President Ed welcomed new members Dennis and Jodie Lewerke before opening the meeting at 8:10 P.M. Members thanked John and Sharon Fank and Mike Hrubes for providing refreshments.
Minutes were read and approved. Treasurer's report for the month of February and March was read and approved.
Our next meeting will be at Debbie and Duane O'Banion's in Nora Springs on April 21 at 7:00 P.M. They will provide refreshments. We will make floating and stationary veggie filters. Duane has access to pipes and fittings and will purchase supplies needed prior to the meeting. It is very important that members call Duane to let him know which type and how many filters they wish to make that night so the proper amount of supplies can be pre-ordered. For more information, and to place your order, call Duane or Debbie at 641-749-2445. Deb and Duane live in a blue house at the T intersection six blocks north of Casey's General Store on Hwy 122 in Nora Springs at 14 6th St. NW.
The May meeting will be held at Happy Acres in Osage. Mary will present a program on plants as oxygenator.
Under old business Deb stated Mary from Happy Acres would be glad to order water plants for us at a group rate. Deb distributed handouts with the number and type of water plants available. Members are asked to bring a list of plants they want to order to the next meeting at Deb and Duane's. If you were not at the meeting, but wish a list so that you can order plants at a reduced rate, please call and talk to Deb or Duane. Mary asked that her company, Happy Acres be listed as a Fountain Supporter in the CIWGA newsletter.
Because we will be meeting at Happy Acres in May the date for our plant and/or fish exchange was changed. We will meet at the home of Mary Schultz at 9:30 A.M. on the second or third Saturday in May (depending on when CIWGA sets their date--traditionally the second or third Saturday in May). Both dates will be announced at the April meeting.
We again discussed hosting a pond tour this year. No definite decision has been made at this time.
New Business. Deb passed around a brochure she printed and handed out when Jamie Beyer spoke at the North Iowa Fair Home Show. Deb said it is a work in progress and asked for members' suggestions. She is working on adding graphics and will bring a revised copy to our next meeting.
Mary read an e-mail from Gretchen at CIWGA in regard to publicity. Gretchen also sent a list of newspapers in our area. Mary, Kathy and Ed previously reviewed the list and asked members for additional suggestions. The revised list will be sent to Gretchen who will send a publicity clip to each paper prior to our meetings.
Our meeting was adjourned at 9:00.
As always, please call or e-mail Ed Schroeder if you have any questions, or are interested in joining us, 641-923-3512 or krafty@ncn.net.
