The group met on Monday, Oct. 21st at the home of Carol and Randy Kirkbride. It was a small group with only six members attending but we all enjoyed listening to Master Gardner Ella Stone answer questions about flowers for areas of our yards other than our ponds. We all gained some new ideas and suggestions of annuals or perennials we are anxious to try - if only it was spring now!
The Polk County Chapter will be changing meeting nights in order to utilize the Polk County Extension office facility for most of our meetings. We will now be meeting on the 4th TUESDAY instead of Monday. The DM group has kind of "regrouped" and decided that we will NOT have a November and December meeting and will try to start again in January, the 4th Tuesday which is the 28th. This is due to our very low attendance at meetings which has just not been high enough to sustain us having speakers come in. So...we are going to try again in the spring to get this group going and plan to start with a January meeting and see how it goes. We hope that those in the Des Moines area will come out for meetings so that the group can get going, and keep going!
The Top of Iowa Water Garden Association met Monday, October 21 at the Garner Area Education Center in Garner. Our program was presented by Stan Fitz of Fitz-Reading Gardens in Rockford, Iowa. He starts around 100 flats of seeds in his basement during the winter for spring planting. He told us how to start seeds for planting in the spring. It was a very interesting program.
During our meeting we discussed some of the things we wanted to do next year. We also discussed the possibility of having a water garden tour. We will not be meeting during November and December. Our next meeting will be January 20. The program and location will be announced in the December newsletter.
